Scott Chaseling is a master craftsperson who is pushing the very boundaries and definitions of glass. After studying in Australia, Scott travelled widely developing new works in new locations through teaching, residencies and workshops. Solo museum exhibitions have been in the European Museum of Contemporary Glass, Germany, the Musee du Verre, France and Canberra Museum and Gallery, Australia.

Using the medium of glass to tell personal stories, Scott has worked at both an intimate and large scale for decades. His connection to the medium, as he tells it, was immediate as he had wandered into the JamFactory in 1982 seeking a traineeship.

 When I took my first gather of molten glass from the tank, I smiled,” he said. “In that singular moment of connection between my hands and the material, I knew I had found a lifetime in front of me that would be dedicated to this craft.”

That connection has never waned. Today Scott’s work is represented in many international museums and private collections including the Australian National Gallery, Museum Kunst Palast. Dusseldorf Germany and 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan.

Scott believes that in 2026 we are “standing on the precipice of a magnificent renaissance for craft”.

“For years, we have been saturated by the ‘schmick’, highly refined aesthetics of mass production,” says Scott. Paradoxically, it is this very explosion of digital perfection Scott believes will trigger a new “Craft Epoch”. 

“There is a human hunger for the tangible. We are witnessing a collective return to the asymmetrical and the imperfect, those objects that bear the visible touch of the maker, and which pay homage to the history of their material and the ancient techniques that shaped them.”
